When it comes to healing our emotions, thoughts, or bodies from ailments or dis-eases, we often seek so many ‘things’ outside of ourselves. What if I told you that you have everything you need to have a healed you right now? Discover what it takes to have a more healed version of yourself in just however long it takes to read this, if it resonates.
1) Awareness
There are things we know, things we know we don’t know, and things we don’t know we don’t know. The practice of awareness helps us bridge the gap between what we don’t know and what we would truly benefit from knowing. We can enlarge our scope of awareness first by being open to the possibility that we do not know everything and that there may be something we need to know in order to get what we want. In this case, what we want is healing. There is no need to struggle our way into healing, rather we can begin by finding a sense of calmness in our minds that what we need will come to us as long as we are open to receiving. These are age old mentalities that honor the energetic expression of our universe, not woo-woo concepts that deliver no results.
Awareness can begin to be practiced on a surface, physical level. How aware are we in any given moment? Are we noticing the street noise outside or perhaps the birds in the trees? When we can drop into the present moment into our senses and bring our awareness to differing aspects of our being we can often quite quickly shift our state of being to one of more comfort. For example if I start to feel anxiety and I feel that I might be not well or am losing control of my sense of calm then I might bring my awareness to my senses. Maybe the music or any auditory stimulation is just a bit too loud. Perhaps the screen is a bit too bright. Our body really likes to give us clues as to what it is needing if we bring ourselves into each moment fully to really witness ourselves. If I bring awareness into my body then I might also realize that how I am standing or sitting that is creating a kink in my bodies flow of energy and misaligning my natural state of being, (i.e. how most of us are living right now). If I know what my body feels like when it feels good then I know how to help it to not feel bad.
Once we have become familiar with our body’s innate ability to become aware of its surroundings, we can journey into the awareness of our emotions. Emotions are directly tied to the state of our body. We can liken the relationship between emotions and the body’s feelings to the question: what came first, the chicken or the egg? What came first, the emotion or the body’s feelings? This is practically a trick question, because it is physiologically impossible to disconnect any emotion from the body. So, if you are feeling emotionally about something then it is guaranteed to be represented in the body. If the body is experiencing something, it is guaranteed to be reflected emotionally, whether subtle or pronounced. The practice of awareness is our ability to notice these subtleties. Awareness does not require any particular judgements or mental assessments to take place or not take place. Awareness is about noticing, not labelling or anchoring an ultimatum created by your patterned thinking process.
2) Accountability
Once you are able to non-judgmentally hold awareness, then you can comfortably and confidently take accountability. When was the last time you took responsibility for an uncomfortable or undesirable situation? How many situations present themselves in your life that truly have nothing to do with you, but cause you the be the victim? How often could it be the case that undesirable situations you find yourself in are partially or wholly due to your own actions or inaction?
How we show up in our agreements with ourselves and others matters. Most of the agreements that we break are with ourselves. We say we want to eat healthier and we even pay people to help us do this, yet we find justification in the choice to continue the pattern we are asking ourselves to eradicate. We want forward movement, but we pump the breaks as it can feel quite intimidating to actually face the uncomfortable emotions that arise when we instill new patterns. We can have what we want, simply because we can choose it for ourselves. Being aware of the emotions that arise, without judgement or claiming mental ultimatums about them, sets the stage for taking accountability without feeling guilt, shame, or victimhood. If you can get to a place within your life where you are choosing to uphold your desired values then you have yourself to count on in regards to anything that you want for yourself, or you can choose to let yourself down. Whether it’s bigger muscles, better posture, healthier food choices, cutting out toxic chemicals, or a more positive mindset, you can shift anything. Hold yourself accountable without judgement and experience new miracles within yourself and in your relations to others.
3) Physical Expression
We are co-pilots in this realty with our bodies and our minds, which are intertwined physiologically as one system. If we do not tend to our physical needs, we will literally whither away. It is because of this that we hold a powerful duty as humans to engage and honor our bodies. If you want to heal, the body must be acknowledged every step of the way. Release and reset within the body and nervous system can best take place through physical activity, crying, vocal expression, stillness, relaxation, high intensity exercise, etc. When our bodies move, our emotions move. When our emotions move, our thoughts shifts. When our thoughts shift, we take different actions. When we take different actions, our lifestyle can align itself into routine wellness which ultimately is the foundation for being able to heal. Healing cannot take place sustainably without expression.
Physical expression helps us find and remain balanced. Let your creativity flow and allow that balance into this linear programmable world. Get out of the box and find ways to use your voice, body, and intuitive nature to bring happiness and joy into a balanced lifestyle. You can try toning different notes in an ‘ah’ voice. You actually don’t even need to know any notes or rhythms to be able to do this. Play around with it until it feels good, or don’t. We get to take a look at what really excites us, or discover what that is, and then learn how to make ourselves feel good by giving ourselves more of what we need. Are your legs in pain at night? Stretch on the floor instead of sitting in a chair, or stand and stretch and move your body around however it feels good to you in the moment. Allowing the body that opportunity of movement can dramatically shift holding patterns in the body. This is why Yoga is used to revitalize our internal spirit and release physical stagnancy that may be holding our emotions or thoughts in tight patterns.
4) Gaining Knowledge
Once new knowledge is attained, a new ability to navigate the inner and outer worlds becomes apparent. When you are mentally and physically positioned to practice awareness, take responsibility, and express your physical self, then it is time to gain new knowledge. There are countless ways to miraculously heal, but if the mind is not open enough, those modalities will not be received or integrated. Knowledge truly is power. Imagine not having the knowledge that you could use an umbrella when it rains. This may sound ludicrous, but really imagine not knowing that and suffering through intense rain every single year without an umbrella. Imagine looking around you and wondering why the heck other people are using these strange contraptions over their head. Without the awareness and humility to look at situations without any previous judgements, we may easily overlook the ability to use an umbrella at all. Most people in this day and age know what umbrellas are and are willing to use them to protect from strong rain. However, there are still so many people all around us that do not know that they can simply cry and release oxytocin and endorphins and purge those negative items that are literally physically stuck inside them. Yes, our most basic and foundational toxin release mechanism is overlooked in almost as silly as a manner as not having the knowledge that umbrellas protect you from rain.
When you see someone who has what you want or feels how you want to feel, it is a prime opportunity to learn something new. If someone has or feels something that you don’t, they likely know something that you do not know. There is seemingly an infinite amount of knowledge around us, yet we know so little individually. We gift ourselves new life by allowing ourselves the chance to actively seek new knowledge, concepts, habits, mentalities, and so on. How will you heal (protect yourself from the rain) if you do not even know the ways in which it is possible (that umbrellas protect you from the rain)? Learn from others that have what you want and be open to new possibilities. Healing can only take a fraction of a second when you place yourself in the right environment.
5) Action
Healing any aspect of yourself can occur rapidly, especially when you take the right action. After having gained awareness, taken accountability for yourself, expressed your physicality, and gained new knowledge, taking the right action becomes easy and natural. When we do the things that we learn will heal us, we will get results. For example, if you see someone who has or feels what you want to have or feel, try learning what they did and then actually do those things. Whether you have heard someone who healed a serious disease or illness, or simply lost weight and now shines, try learning from what they did. The only excuse for inaction is speculation. Until you are clear about what to do, there is no need to act. The first four steps outlined here will prepare you to gain the right knowledge and be able to put it into action with relatively little resistance.
Taking action often requires an accountability partner, whether that’s your spouse, friend, mentor, coach, or someone who is in an internet group across the world. If you want to build a house, start laying each brick one at time. There is no need to build a home in one day, but there is a need to build a home to be sturdy. The same goes for your healing. While it is possible to miraculously shift a physical, mental, or emotional reality in one moment, it is not a requirement for substantial healing. We actually recommend allowing an appropriate amount of integration time for the body mind and soul to be able to catch up to itself after such a massive shift occurs. The only requirement is that you do something. They say that 20% of our actions create 80% of the results. Keep this in mind while you are on your journey to heal. We may try 10 different things to heal some aspect of ourselves, but it may only be 1-2 of them that make the most impact. You can conquer anything that is in front of you, otherwise it would not have presented itself. This reality can be seen as an all-encompassing test in trust, surrendering, and trying different things.
